Who Monitors the Birds? is the twelfth episode of Season 1 of Space: Above and Beyond.

Undertaking a covert assassination operation in exchange for an honorable discharge, Cooper Hawkes is wounded while his team member is killed. All alone inside enemy territory he struggles to stay alive and is haunted by visions of death trying to seduce him in the incarnation of Shane Vansen. He remembers his past In Vitro education and how he was scheduled to be terminated because he asked too many questions.
Summary[]
Cooper Hawkes is chosen to accompany Major Colquitt on a secret mission on the Chig-held planet Tigrus. If they succeed in killing the Chig general that was responsible for the attack on the Vesta settlers, Hawkes will be granted an honorable discharge from the Corps.
Early in their covert mission, Colquitt is killed and Cooper is stranded alone on the planet and has to fight off not only advancing Chigs but the memories of the days when he was in the In Vitro Facility as well as a mysterious apparition, that beckons him to accompany her...
