The Farthest Man from Home is the second episode of Season 1 of Space: Above and Beyond.
The episode aired October 1, 1995 on the Fox Network.
The space carrier USS SARATOGA passes close to the planet Tellus where human colonists were ambushed. Hoping that his missing girlfriend Kylen somehow survived, West goes AWOL with a Hammerhead and flies down to the planet.
Summary[]
A United States Army Special Forces team rescues a survivor from the Tellus Colony, and rumors begin that there are more survivors from the colony still on Tellus. One of the managers from AeroTech, Howard Sewell, arrives on the USS SARATOGA and Nathan is suspicious that something is going on. After Nathan has talked to the survivor in secrecy, he finds out that Kylen Celina is still alive and is determined to find her. He steals a SA-43 Hammerhead and flies to Tellus. McQueen is furious but nevertheless he does not send a patrol after Nathan because Tellus is under the control of the Chigs. Shane Vansen asks Cooper to accompany her to Tellus during a patrol flight. During the starting sequence, McQueen nods towards Vansen, giving her his approval to look for Nathan.
Meanwhile, West's SA-43 is damaged over Tellus but he manages to land it. He finds a name tag on which Kylen tells Nathan that he should look for her in higher reaches. He sets out towards the mountains and finds a cave which is a burial place for the aliens. He finds two female survivors, Theresa Ashford and Yuko Kyaguest, hiding there. Ashford tells him that Kylen hid in the cave with them as well but was captured by the aliens. The survivors give him their location and he sets out to find the camp. As he approaches the alien camp he sees captives being boarded onto an alien transport but cannot rescue them.
Cooper and Shane arrive on Tellus but after an attack of enemy missiles, Cooper is hit and crash lands his Hammerhead. He looks for Nathan and eventually finds him. From the two survivors they learn that the aliens bury their dead just as humans do but with one difference, they fear their dead.
Shane returns to the SARATOGA and reports that Hawkes has been shot down. McQueen suspects that Cooper has followed Nathan to Tellus and he sends out a transport to retrieve them. Nathan watches the alien transport leaving the planet with Kylen onboard. Sewell takes the survivors away when they arrive on the SARATOGA and Nathan, Cooper, Shane and McQueen get reprimanded by Commodore Ross but he does not court martial them because this incident is hushed up and has never happened. Here the 58th Squadron gets their squadron name: the Wild Cards.
