Mutiny is the fourth episode of Season 1 of Space: Above and Beyond.
The episode aired October 15, 1995 on the Fox Network.
The 58th travel upon a civilian cargo hauler. The ship is attacked and the captain decides to sacrifice part of his In Vitro cargo destined for the Corvus system in order to save his ship. A mutiny forces Hawkes and McQueen, both In Vitroes, to make a difficult decision.
Summary[]
In between mission assignments, the Wild Cards are in transit back to the USS SARATOGA on the freighter SCV MacArthur. The freighter has a mixed human/In Vitro crew although the "tanks" fill all the dangerous positions on the ship.
When Cooper finds out that they are transporting unborn In Vitroes, he becomes curious about the cargo manifests. McQueen advises him not to look for any relatives because it would only hurt him more if he would not find any. Eventually CPO Keats provides the manifest list to Cooper, who finds a female with the same genetic code.
While transiting Blood Alley, the freighter suffers multiple engineering failures and substantial power loss from her nuclear powerplant. Vanessa is sent down to engineering to help the crew troubleshoot and repair the ship's engines. McQueen and West believe that they are being attacked by a Chig Destroyer going for a "soft kill" but due to the interstellar effects of the area they are transiting it is hard to get a lock on the enemy ship.
After a subsequent attack and having already diverted power from all unused systems and unoccupied sections of the ship, the Captain of the freighter determines that the only way they will have enough power to escape is to shut down power to the section of the cargo holds that hold the In Vitroes in stasis, killing them in the act. The Captain and First Mate are accidentally killed in the action. Cooper is conflicted and wants to support the crewmembers, however he is also a Marine. McQueen persuades the mutinying crewmembers to return to their stations in order to escape the Chigs.
Cooper is conflicted, wanting to side with the mutineers but knowing his duty to his fellow Marines. He executes McQueen's order to shut down power to the cargo modules in order to have enough power for the ship's weapons systems. Shane and Paul are then able to shoot and destroy the Chig ship. Cooper is left gazing into the module that had held his "sister", apologizing to her.
